Vision

ADGG’s vision is to see that African smallholder dairy farmers are continuously accessing more productive dairy genetics, breeding and farmer education services and other related input services enabling their farming enterprises to be profitable and competitive businesses.

The following are the expected indicators of success from the stakeholders in the program:

Private sector perspective

  1. Business opportunities around certified dairy cattle breeding and delivery of improved dairy genetics is profitable and growing and is expanding to other countries.

Farmers perspective

  1. The majority of farmers are utilizing artificial insemination (AI) technology in the project areas and beyond (i.e. AI services are readily available and there is increasing demand for certified bulls and farmers are willing to pay for semen and the bundled services associated with AI delivery).
  2. Productivity per cow is doubled by the end of the program (i.e. more productive and profitable dairy cows bred and distributed through African Dairy Genetic Gain (ADGG) Program and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-supported public Partnership for Artificial Insemination Delivery (PAID) activities.
  3. Farmers are actively recording herd performance and remitting information/ data to the platforms.
  4. Farmers are willing to pay for information (farmer education) services and realizing demonstrable benefits (i.e. are receiving valuable and targeted feedback).
  5. Thousands of farmers are engaged in best production practices via farmer-driven data collection, feedback and use systems.
  6. Non-ADGG farmers are attracted to the program and seeking to be part of/join it.
  7. Farmers are making informed decisions (i.e. farmers are continuously receiving feedback and in the process continuously being educated, and that the information shared through the text messages of the interactive Dairy Performance Recording Centers (DPRCs) and ICow platforms is used to enhance dairy production practices, thus improving dairy productivity.

Public sector perspective

  1. That the information captured and processed through the DPRCs is integrated into the national systems to improve sustainability of dairy production.
  2. That government upscale the outputs from the project to other areas
  3. That the government investment in dairy, and decision-making at national levels is informed by the farmer’s decisions and data systems from the project (i.e. a change in dairy investment paradigm).
  4. That the national DPRCs and the National Artificial Insemination Centers (NAICs) are effective and sustainable.
  5. That the private sector actors would identify and exploit expanded business opportunities in service provision for the dairy sector.
